Powerful Free Data Recovery

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.
TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know
little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used
to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can
then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with
such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite
recovery.

Phishers use DNS tricks

Anti-phishing group reports a sharp rise in malware that directs users to DNS servers controlled by phishers.

The latest information on phishing indicates that fraudsters are increasingly using malicious software to direct users to
their deceptive sites.
The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) said in a new report Thursday that it saw a sharp rise in November in malware that directs users to DNS (Domain Name System) servers controlled
by phishers.
DNS servers play a crucial role in locating Web sites. The servers translate a domain name into an IP (Internet protocol)
address, enabling a Web site to be located and accessed through a browser.
Often, the phishers will set up their own DNS server that works fine most of the time but can redirect to their own malicious
site. more he

Diesel linked to truckers' deaths

The odds of dying from heart disease are nearly 50 percent higher for
truck drivers than the general U.S. population, and diesel exhaust is a
likely culprit, according to a new Harvard University study of
importance to transportation-heavy California.

The findings are part of the largest and most comprehensive study yet
conducted on the effects of diesel engine emissions on trucking
industry workers nationwide, from long-haul drivers to office clerks,
engine mechanics and dockworkers exposed to exhaust in the yard. Harvard Medical School researchers said they examined the jobs and
medical histories of more than 54,000 male Teamsters union members who
had worked for one of four national trucking companies from 1985
through 2000.
The findings are important not only for transportation workers but also
for people who commute in heavy diesel-fueled traffic or who live or
work near truck terminals, ports and railroad yards, said Cynthia
Garcia, a state air pollution scientist. more here

Most malware now from legitimate sites

Most websites serving up malware are legitimate according to a senior
security researcher. Dan Hubbard, Websense's vice president of security
research, said that for the first time, legitimate sites seized by
hackers outnumber malicious ones.

According to data compiled by Websense, 51 percent of the sites it
classified as malicious in the second half of 2007 had been compromised
and then seeded with attack code that infected unpatched machines
visiting the URLs. The remaining 49 percent were "intentionally built
for malicious intent," the Websense report said. source

Process Lasso v2.44

Process Lasso is a unique new technology intended to
automatically adjust the allocation of CPU cycles so that system
responsiveness is improved in high-load situations. It does this by
dynamically temporarily lowering the priorities of processes that are
consuming too many CPU cycles, there-by giving other processes a chance
to run if they are in need. This is useful for both single and
multi-core processors. No longer will a single process be able to bring
your system to a virtual stall. n addition, Process Lasso offers capabilities such as
default process priorities, default process CPU affinities, termination
of disallowed processes, and logging of processes executed. With Process
Lasso you essentially create rules to manage processes running on your
system. freeware http://www.processlasso.com/prolasso.php

Small antivirus companies are overwhelmed

Small antivirus and anti-spyware companies are being
overwhelmed by the amount of malware being produced, according to
security researcher Alex Eckelberry.
Eckelberry, president and chief executive of antivirus company Sunbelt
Software, said on Thursday that the huge amount of malware in existence
makes it difficult for small compnaies to tackle the problem. "No longer can a company compete with a few folks in the lab and a group of good programmers," wrote Eckelberry in a blog post.
"They're out there: little companies with small teams working an
anti-spyware or antivirus product, but it's hopeless. A small platoon
won't win this war. You need a brigade."

Get your programs faster with less fuss

Downloading the latest versions of your favorite programs is a tiring
task, especially on a fresh installation of Windows. Navigating through
the mess of websites and download links is frustrating, waiting for the
installers to download is boring, and running each one separately is
annoying. InstallPad can help you. It takes a list of your favorite programs and
will download and install the ones you pick. It doesn't need to ask any
questions, so you can go do more important things. InstallPad can
resume downloads you've canceled, and can even try and find the latest
version of your program online. If you administrate or develop for Windows, InstallPad can help you get
a machine set up with service packs, applications or development tools
without the need for CDs or running lots of scripts. With it you can
quickly install a host of programs silently, pass arguments to the
installers, and run post-installation scripts.

Cops can search you and your phones memory

Here's a frightening but real proposition: if you are caught breaking
certain traffic laws, not only do police have the right to search
you—they can go through all your electronic data as
well—your text messages, call histories, browsing history,
downloaded emails and photos. In a recent academic paper, South Texas
Assistant Professor Adam Gershowitz explains that because many traffic
violations are arrestable offenses, just as a cop could search your
pockets for drugs, said cop can also search your pockets for a
smartphone and go through all its contents. The same is true for any
standard arrest, and given the amount of data in current smartphones,
it's a scary proposition (even for law-abiding citizens like us).

243% more protection than antivirus alone

Will your antivirus software catch the latest malware that just came out today? In most cases, no, because
it simply does not know how to detect it yet.
But ThreatFire's ActiveDefense technology does, and has
proven to provide up to 243% more protection when combined with traditional AntiVirus products.
PCs are under constant attack from viruses, spyware and identity theft. Every day you hear about a new
threat to your PC. They're coming faster than ever before, they're getting harder to stop and traditional
antivirus products are not able to keep up. ThreatFire is dramatically different to traditional antivirus software. Normal antivirus products
usually need to have first identified and seen a threat before they can provide adequate protection
against it. The protection is then provided via a signature or fingerprint update, which must first
be written by an antivirus researcher. This creates a large window of time where threats are undetected
and can therefore infect your PC even when you have antivirus software installed. ThreatFire continually protects your PC against attacks by detecting malicious behavior, such
as capturing your keystrokes or stealing your data, instead of only looking for known threats like normal
antivirus software. By implementing sophisticated real-time behavioral analysis ThreatFire is
able to stop never- before-seen
"zero-day" threats
solely by detecting their malicious activity. http://www.threatfire.com/

Investigation Prompts Call For Change In Trucking Industry

Local 2 Investigates exposed the
problem last year. Now massive, nationwide changes to the trucking
industry are being proposed. Our hidden camera investigation showed how
a person with no experience and little training could still get a
license to drive an 18-wheeler. The proposed changes are aimed at
making the roads safer for you and your family. Our hidden
cameras followed a Local 2 employee last February as he took the
state's road test for a class-A commercial driver's license, a license
that will allow him to drive any 80,0000 pound commercial truck. But
before our employee took the state's test, his only experience with
commercial trucks consisted of watching videos on truck safety for
three hours, studying practice tests for another two hours and a
21-minute, 16-second practice drive. But that practice drive wasn't
even in an 18-wheeler. It was in a 14-wheel vehicle with a push button
transmission and no container on the back. That was all it took for him to pass all of the state's tests and walk away with a class-A commercial driver's license.

FBI warns of rise in phone-based 'vishing' attacks

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's
Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned Thursday that so-called
"vishing" attacks are on the rise. These are scams where criminals send
an e-mail or text message to a victim, saying there has been a security
problem and the victim needs to call his or her bank to reactivate a
credit or debit card. "Upon calling the telephone number, the recipient is greeted with
'Welcome to the bank of ...' and then [is] requested to enter their
card number in order to resolve a pending security issue," the IC3 said
in its alert.

In the past few years, inexpensive VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
technology and open-source call-center software has made it inexpensive
for scammers to set up phony call centers, paving the way for these new
types of scams. Security experts say that vishing can be more effective
than traditional phishing techniques -- which direct victims to fake
Web sites -- because the voice-based attacks have not been as widely
publicized. A new vishing scam involves sending text messages to cell phones,
instructing victims to contact the fake online bank to renew their
accounts, the IC3 said. Those who are unsure whether they have been targeted by this scam
should look up the bank's phone number and call the bank directly, the
IC3 advises.
Operated in partnership with the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, the IC3 is a clearinghouse for Internet crime complaints. source

Trucking Stocks Soar

NEW YORK — Shares of most trucking companies soared Monday after
a Bear Stearns analyst upgraded the sector, suggesting that the stocks'
values are nearing bottoms, but warned the sector isn't out of the
woods yet.Analyst Edward Wolfe raised his rating on the trucking sector to
"Market Weight" from "Underweight." He also upgraded carriers Werner
Enterprises Inc., Heartland Express Inc., Knight Transportation Inc.,
Con-way Inc. and Arkansas Best Corp. to "Peer Perform" from
"Underperform."Wolfe said while demand remains weak, it doesn't appear to be getting
worse. He predicted 2008 will be a very volatile year for trucking
stocks, as opposed to the last several years in which the sector has
consistently underperformed the broader markets.Wolfe has held an "Underweight" rating on truckers for two and a half years. In midday trading, truckload carrier Werner Enterprises rose 92 cents,
or 5.7 percent, to $17.05. Heartland Express added 57 cents, or 4.2
percent, to $14.19, and Knight Transportation gained 83 cents, or 5.5
percent, to $15.84. J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. climbed 69 cents,

Analyze license agreements for interesting words and phrases

End user license agreements (EULAs) are the bane of most computer users
.

No one wants to read through pages and pages of boring text before
installing a program. And many programs put their license agreements in
small windows that require lots of scrolling. So many people either
skim them or skip reading them altogether.
But it can be dangerous not to read license agreements.

License agreements can provide information about the intentions of
software, and other bundled components. Have you ever installed a
program, only to have your desktop taken over by advertising? It may
have been noted in the license agreement that you simply clicked past.
If you aren't reading the license agreements, you have no idea what you
could be agreeing to.
You should always read license agreements before agreeing to them.

But now there's a way of making that much easier. EULAlyzer http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/eulalyzer.html

Black Ice Information

Black ice is ice frozen without many air bubbles trapped inside, making it transparent.
Black ice takes the color of the material it lies on top of, often wet
asphalt or a darkened pond. Its difficult-to-detect nature makes it a
significant hazard to drivers, pedestrians, and sailors.Black ice, also known as "glare ice" or "clear ice," typically refers to a thin coating of glazed ice on a surface, often a roadway. While not truly black, it is transparent, allowing the usually-black asphalt/macadam roadway to be seen through it, hence the term. It is unusually slick compared to other forms of roadway ice.

Deadly Mexican gunbattles spark fears of Texas spillover

Deadly gunbattles in two Mexican border cities last week left their
sister communities in the Rio Grande Valley hoping that the brutal
cross-border violence plaguing Nuevo Laredo for years had not spread
downstream permanently. Five people died in fierce firefights between suspected Gulf Cartel
gunmen and Mexican troops and federal agents in Rio Bravo and Reynosa. Those cities sit just across the Rio Grande from lucrative havens for
so-called Winter Texans, setting the multi-billion dollar drug trade on
a collision course with a growing tourism industry. "We're very concerned that the Mexican military controls its violence,"
said Hidalgo County Judge J.D. Salinas. "I stopped going across (the
border) to have lunch years back."Salinas said he now routinely declines invitations from his counterpart in Reynosa to attend events there. On the other hand, an average of about 18,000 passenger vehicles crossed bridges from Reynosa into Hidalgo and Pharr every day last year, according to U.S. Customs and Border
Protection. More than 5,500 people walked across those bridges daily. Miriam Medel Garcia, spokeswoman for the Mexican Consulate in McAllen,
said it was too early to tell if the recent violence would affect
cross-border traffic in the area.

Untrained truckers busted

Highway Patrol auxiliary officer Carlos Gimeno arrests Jesus Luis Montesino in his home on Friday morning. If you wanted to be a trucker but didn't have time for the training, Steven Baez was your guy. The sergeant with the Army National Guard had a stack of vouchers (form
DA-348E) that excused wannabe drivers from taking the state of
Florida's commercial vehicle competency exam. He sold them to South
Floridians for up to $4,300 a pop. And then he got busted. Now his customers are being taken off the road. In a series of predawn raids Friday throughout Miami-Dade County,
federal state and local authorities busted five bleary-eyed truck
operators. Two more were arrested later in the day. Many more arrests are coming. Cops say Baez, who pleaded guilty to the
scam and faces sentencing on Jan. 16, sold at least 200 of the vouchers. source

Autoruns 9.02

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of
auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs
are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the

ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You
can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer

beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP. Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in

Beware of Myspace

There's now one more reason to be security-conscious while using MySpace.com: fake Microsoft updates. Using a hacked MySpace profile, online criminals are trying to trick victims into downloading a malicious Trojan Horse program
by disguising it as a Microsoft update, according to researchers at security vendor McAfee.
Web surfers are presented with what appears to be
a popup window advising them to download the latest version of
Microsoft's Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which was just
released this Tuesday. This software is distributed by Microsoft to
help Windows users rid their systems of malware.
In reality, the popup window is just part of a larger image that takes up most of the computer screen. If the user clicks
anywhere on this image, his computer will then begin to download the Trojan program. source

Lake Erie UFOs

Waves of UFO sightings over the waters of Lake Erie are earning the
great lake a reputation as a UFO hot spot. But the lake's new
popularity may have more to do with a string of popular videos on
YouTube than sightings of little green men. "It's a hot spot," declares local ufologist Aaron Clark about the
beaches of Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio. "Some believe there's a UFO
base on the bottom of the lake." While not yet rivaling UFO hot spots like Mexico City or Phoenix, Lake
Erie has generated enough buzz that news and documentary filmmakers are
taking notice. Several Lake Erie UFO videos have made the national
news, and The History Channel is airing a segment on Lake Erie UFOs,
due to air in February.
There have been more than 20 credible UFO sightings in the area in the last two years, according to Clark, a spokesman for the Cleveland Ufology Project, one of the oldest UFO-spotting groups in the country. source

Satellite Antenna Alignment Software

The latest version 2.38.0 has been released on January 07, 2008. Download the latest version now ("saa.exe")

The program "Satellite Antenna Alignment" is used to calculate
the angles necessary for installing satellite dishes. The main difference
from similar software is the possibility to calculate the position
for all satellites at once. Thus, you get a clear picture about
what satellites can be physically visible from the location where
the dish will be installed. It should be kept in mind that the program
makes a purely theoretical calculation according to formulas and
in real circumstances a lot of additional factors should be taken
into account when a satellite dish is installed. These factors include
various obstacles (buildings, trees), the landscape, the altitude,
transponder orientation, polarization, etc. Nevertheless, this program
will allow you to evaluate the position quite precisely. The calculation
can be saved to a text file, copied to the Windows clipboard or
printed out at once. It is possible to save the list of locations
for which the calculation is done. Later on, you will not have to
enter the coordinates of these locations again. Just select them
from the table. http://www.al-soft.com/saa/satinfo.shtml

Future add-ins will plug directly into CFP. Its main screen shows
overall system status, much as many security suites do. It also
includes Comodo news, a tip of the day, and links to configure program
features. Most suites display a red warning if you turn off a
significant security element, but CFP figures that if you turned it off

actively wrong with the configuration, in which case it offers a link
to a built-in diagnostic that could fix the problem.

beefing up magnets for electric-drive cars

Ask Iver Anderson at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames
Laboratory about consumer interest in and desire for
“ultragreen” electric-drive vehicles, and he’ll reply
without a moment’s hesitation that the trend is unstoppable and
growing fast. The Ames Lab senior metallurgist and Iowa State University adjunct
professor of materials science and engineering is playing a major role
in advancing electric drive motor technology to meet the enormous swell
in consumer demand expected over the next five years. He and his Ames
Lab colleagues, Bill McCallum and Matthew Kramer, have designed a high-
performance permanent magnet alloy that operates with good magnetic
strength at 200 degrees Celsius, or 392 degrees Fahrenheit, to help
make electric drive motors more efficient and cost-effective. The work
is part of the DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Program to develop more
energy-efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation
technologies that will enable America to use less petroleum. full story

It can hit 100 miles per hour and get to 60mph in 8.5 seconds—faster than
Cadillac’s current crossover. And I believe those numbers. I got to drive the super-peppy
Equinox around Vegas today and I was amazed at the whiplash acceleration.

Third Massachusetts death blamed on infected milk

A third elderly man has died in an outbreak of listeriosis linked to a central Massachusetts dairy. The victim, identified only as an 87-year-old
from Norfolk County southeast of Boston, became sick in November and
died last week, The Boston Globe reported.
The source of the infection is believed to be
Whittier Farms, a Worcester-area dairy. Whittier had previously been
known as an old-fashioned company that still home-delivered milk and
other dairy products, and sold milk in glass bottles.
Dr. Alfred DeMaria, the Massachusetts director of
communicable disease control, said five cases of listeriosis had been
identified. The most recent to be discovered was a woman diagnosed with
listeriosis in September while hospitalized to deliver a baby. Health
officials have found she drank Whittier milk before becoming sick.

The Bush administration broke yet another law in continuing to allow long-haul trucks from Mexico to use

just blows my mind," said Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa. "Did
Transportation Secretary Mary Peters somehow forget she took an oath of office

4 health behaviors can add 14 extra years of life

People who adopt four healthy behaviours – not smoking; taking
exercise
; moderate alcohol intake; and eating five servings of fruit
and vegetables
a day – live on average an additional fourteen
years of life compared with people who adopt none of these behaviours,
according to a study published in the open access journal PLoS Medicine. Rather than focusing on how an individual factor is related to health,
the study calculates the combined impact of these four simply-defined
forms of behaviour. The results suggest that several small changes in
lifestyle could have a marked impact on the health of populations. There is overwhelming evidence showing that lifestyles such as smoking,
diet and physical activity influence health and longevity but there is
little information about their combined impact. Furthermore the huge
amount of information provided by these studies and the varying
definitions of a health behaviour that these studies use can often make
them confusing for public health professionals and for the general
public. For example: small amounts of alcohol appear to be related to
lower risk of cardiovascular disease health but what is the overall
impact on longevity "source

Garmin's POI Loader v2.3.2

The Garmin POI Loader allows a
user to download to certain Garmin GPS units (see list here) points
of interest or user specific locations. You might say that these are
nothing more than waypoints, in the newer Garmin auto navigators. Garmin
has
made significant
improvements
to its free POI Loader
since its initial release, making it easier for people to create their own POI
files. Version 2.2, was released in January 2006, and if you do not have
the newer version, we recommend you download it here. The Garmin version
of POI's involves .csv files and now .gpx, which are different from the .ov2
format used with the TomTom.
The POI Loader is now compatible with Garmin's MapSource program included in
Garmin's mapping software. Most units which are compatible do not have
MapSource as part of the package however. But you can also use EasyGPS or G7ToWin, shareware type programs, which will work as well.

There are now a few websites which offer pre-produced POI's. Some are fee sites, others are free. In
the U.S., there are three websites we are currently aware of which
have commercially produced POI files. They include: GPS-POI-US POI Factory and POInUSA. Another where you can send a query and create your own business type listings is POI2Go.com. T
here
is already a wide variety of POI sites for European countries and one for
Australia. Visit Garmin's POI Source page here for links to these sites.
Most of these sites offer files available for download, which
include restaurants as well as speed and red light cameras or other
speed zones, where you may want an alert as you approach it.
You can also create your own. The problem for some, is knowing how to create these
POI files, so they can be downloaded into your unit. There are clearly many ways to do this, this
article only offers a couple of basic ways, to create .csv or .gpx files, for
you to download to your Garmin capable unit, with the POI
Loader.
Once you download POI files into your Garmin unit,
then an option of "Custom POI's" will appear in your "My Locations" category.

Ever find yourself sitting in front of a computer that's been locked
down by an overzealous IT administrator who won't let you install any

All you have to do is launch a Windows application like Calculator, and
then click the Help button. Under Help, click "Help Topics," which will
bring up a help window. Next, all you have to do is right click on the
title bar and select "Jump To URL." Now you can type in any web address
you like, but make sure to include "http://" at the beginning.
Basically what you're looking at is Internet Explorer 6 inside a help

won't automatically add the http:// for you. And of course, there's no
bookmarking feature.source

Researchers at Indiana University in Bloomington recently built an epidemiological model

thousands of WiFi routers could be infected in two weeks -- and most
were infected within 24 to 48 hours.source

Truckers push for national idling laws

Interstate truck drivers are clamoring for national rules on how long
they can idle their engines to keep warm or stay cool during
federally-mandated driving breaks. Truckers say the patchwork of state
and local laws is difficult to follow. The issue challenges state and local regulators, who must protect the
air quality of their communities and the safety of truckers delivering
vital goods. "It is the most frustrating scenario you could imagine," says Todd
Spencer, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent
Drivers Association, which represents 159,000 truckers and small
trucking firms. "The federal regulations say a driver must stop to
sleep after X number of hours.
How many people could sleep in their car
when it's 96 degrees or 14 below without the engine running?"

Eavesdropping on Bluetooth headsets

I know alot of drivers use these so check it out. You might reconsider:) or not
Few users realize that Bluetooth headsets can be exploited granting a
remote attacker the ability to record and inject audio through the
headset while the device is not in an active call. SANS Institute
author and senior instructor Joshua Wright demonstrates. All that is necessary is knowing the device address, which can be
easily sniffed, and the secret pin, which defaults to 0000. The headset
audio is tapped while not in a call, so any room conversation the
headset's mic can pick up can potentially be listened to remotely.

Drivers On Cell Phones Clog Traffic

Motorists who talk on cell phones drive slower on the freeway, pass
sluggish vehicles less often and take longer to complete their trips,
according to a University of Utah study that suggests drivers on cell
phones congest traffic.
"At the end of the day, the average person's commute is longer because
of that person who is on the cell phone right in front of them,"
says
University of Utah psychology Professor Dave Strayer, leader of the
research team. "That SOB on the cell phone is slowing you down and
making you late." full story

D.B. Cooper Unsolved Mystery - cold case files

It is considered one of the great unsolved mysteries of FBI history:
how a seemingly quiet man in his mid-40s hijacked an airliner somewhere
between Seattle and Reno, Nev., in November 1971, then parachuted in
his loafers and trench coat, making off with $200,000 in cash. Who was he? Did he survive? After all these years, federal authorities
say they still do not know, and the case lingers and vexes and
fascinates as the only unsolved airplane hijacking in U.S. history. But now, with the advantage of technologies that were not available
decades ago and with newfound attention from an agent on the West
Coast, the FBI has announced that the cold case is officially hot again
— and the search is on for the parachuter who called himself Dan,
and sometimes, D.B. Cooper. And, for the first time, the FBI is providing pictures and information on the case to the public on its Web site. full story here

CB radio led to a confrontation and mans death

The Washtenaw County sheriff's
department says a 44-year-old man was stabbed to death at a Scio
Township truck stop Saturday after a conversation on a CB radio led to
a confrontation.

The department tells The Ann Arbor News officers got a call Saturday to the TA Travel
Center in Scio Township, about 35 miles west of Detroit. They say Gregory A. Hobalt of Davenport, Iowa, was pronounced dead at the University of Michigan Hospitals.
Authorities are holding a 36-year-old man from Garland, Texas, while they determine charges. They say the suspect apparently made offensive comments on the CB radio about the 10-year-old daughter of Hobalt's girlfriend.
